Services Offered - EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a procedure to rapidly help individuals resolve painful or disturbing memories. It is a relatively new development in psychology, originally designed to help survivors of trauma. It is effective with both adults and children. There are a number of phases in an EMDR treatment, but the majority of the focus is on discussing a particular memory, while alternately having the client move their eyes in a side-to-side motion. This motion, called Bilateral Stimulation, appears to help facilitate communication between both hemispheres of the brain.
Given that EMDR appears to assist people with integrating emotional memories, sessions may trigger intense feelings and physical sensations. Clients also may recall additional memories of an event, which they may find upsetting or disturbing. These intense reactions occur with approximately 10-15% of individuals who go through EMDR. As a result, if you are interested in this approach, it is important to talk with a therapist to ensure that EMDR is right for you.
Although EMDR was originally designed for survivors of trauma, it can also be used with a wide variety of other issues. EMDR can be incorporated into an ongoing therapy with their therapist.
Some issues that can benefit from EDMR include:
- Posttraumatic Stress Disorder
- Unresolved Grief
- Anxiety Disorders in Children
- Sexual Performance Anxiety
- Optimizing Athletic or Acting Performance
- Disturbing or Intrusive Memories
